Uninsured patients to benefit from The Boeing Company’s support

Enhanced IT Infrastructure allows Project Access NOW to serve more patients with the same resources

Project Access NOW continues to demonstrate that partnerships go a long way to doing good for the community. The Boeing Company has joined the roster of the nonprofit’s supporters with a $10,000 donation, which will go toward the purchase of a new information management system to increase the efficiency of Project Access care coordinators.

“We gave the Project Access NOW grant to support our corporate giving strategy of supporting community-based programs that address disparities in healthcare and projects that improve the efficiency of healthcare,” said Deanna Haley, Oregon Community Investor, The Boeing Company Portland.

Project Access NOW’s network of volunteer physicians and other healthcare providers is donating donating care to the low-income, uninsured patients in the four-county Portland metropolitan area. In the last year, patients have been already connected to services representing over $1.5 million in charges.

To use resources as wisely as possible without increasing cost, Project Access NOW is using a regional information management system that allows care coordinators (Project Access staff or volunteers) to connect patients to volunteers and support patients as they navigate the complex health system. The Boeing Company’s support will help upgrade the system to accommodate increases in patient numbers.

“We started connecting patients to volunteers a year ago and we are now hitting our stride – just in time for the economic crisis to cause thousands more to be unemployed and uninsured,” said Linda Nilsen-Solares, Executive Director of Project Access NOW. “The demand for our services will only increase over the next several months. We have to be very creative and collaborative to be able to meet as much of the need as we can in this challenging climate.”

In 2007, The Boeing Company’s corporate charitable cash contributions and in-kind donations totaled more than $50 million, promoting the economic well-being and health of the communities’ most vulnerable residents. Examples of these could include the poor, children and youth, the elderly, displaced persons, and people with disabilities. The Boeing Company was connected to Project Access NOW through the United Way of the Columbia-Willamette, the nonprofit’s strategic partner.
