Colon Cancer Screening in Patients with Ulcerative Colitis
Diagnosis/Definition
- Pan-colitis – U.C. beyond mid-transverse colon (usually entire colon).
- L-sided colitis – U.C. greater than 15 cm, less than mid-transverse colon.
- Ulcerative proctitis – U.C. to less than or equal to 15 cm.
Initial Diagnosis and Management
Typical history of ulcerative colitis.
Ongoing Management and Objectives
For those that require referral for surveillance colonoscopy, no special interval treatment is needed.
Indications for Specialty Care Referral
Pan-colitis – colonoscopy q 1-2 years after 8 years of disease symptoms.
L-sided colitis – colonoscopy q 1-2 years after 15 years of disease symptoms.
Ulcerative proctitis – routine (average risk) screening only.
Criteria for Return to Primary Care
Completion of colonoscopy.
