According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons:
- Temporomandibular disorders include a variety of conditions that cause tenderness and pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Between 5 percent and 15 percent of people in the United States experience pain associated with TMJ disorders and women are more likely than men to develop TMJ disorders.
- TMJ treatment may range from conservative dental and medical care to complex surgery. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include short-term non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for pain and muscle relaxation, bite plate or splint therapy, and even stress management counseling.
